Built Green BC – Opportunities Envelope Initiative
Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources (MEMPR) wishes to encourage the adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies in all sectors of the economy of British Columbia. MEMPR has established the strategy Energy Efficiency in Buildings: A Plan for BC that aims to permanently transform the market by improving the energy performance of new and existing buildings in British Columbia by 2010.
The market transformation approach includes the following four distinctive types of measures, delivered in a sequential manner:
- Information, education, and capacity building measures that increase the awareness of consumers and industry on the availability and merits of cost-effective, energy efficient building designs and equipment, including training initiatives for industry and consumers, and energy performance certification and labeling to inform consumers.
- Voluntary measures that engage key industry and government organizations in the widespread adoption and delivery of energy efficient building designs and equipment.
- Pricing and incentive measures that aim to increase the market share of energy efficient building designs and equipment, making them more mainstream.
- Regulatory measures that ensure universal adoption of cost-effective, energy efficient buildings and equipment, level the playing field in the marketplace, reduce manufacturing and development costs for consumers, and provide an exit strategy for incentive measures.
In order to move forward with the Strategy, MEMPR has secured funding from the Canada’s Opportunities Envelope Program.
